Transitions to Guide Your Classroom

Transition – movement, passage, or change from one position, state, stage, subject, concept, etc., to another; to change.  The transition from one activity to another with ease.

Fun ways to get children from one activity to another, easily.

Going Outside…
(The Old Gray Mare) Going outside is just what we want to do, Just what we want to do, Just what we want to do, Going outside is just what we want to do, During our preschool day, While we’re outside, we’ll have loads and loads of fun, Have loads and loads of fun, Have loads and loads of fun, While we’re outside, we’ll have loads and loads of fun, We’ll run and jump and play.

Outside…
(When Johnny Comes Marching Home) When it’s a time for us to go outside, To play, to play; We find a place to put our toys Away, away; We’ll march so qui – et – ly to the door, We know ex – act – ly what’s in store; When we go outside to play for a little while

Lunch Flag…
A rather simple and effective idea to have a “lunch flag” hanging in the eating area.  Explain to the children when the flag is raised it is time to eat and keep the noise to a minimum.  An additional idea is to use a blue or red flag to signify that the noise level is too loud.

Too Much Noise...
Swish, swish, swish. Too much noise. Can you help me, Girls and boys? Swish, swish, swish. Swish some more. Swish that noise Right out the door. Substitute: crunch, buzz, beep or splash.

Circle Time...
Come on, everybody it’s circle time, circle time, circle time… Come on, everybody, it’s circle time, please come and sit with me.

Welcome Song...
(Happy and You Know It)  Good morning, good morning.. How are you?  Good morning, good morning. How are you?  How are you this special day.  We’re glad you came to play.  Good morning, good morning.. How are you?

Greeting…
(We Wish You A Merry Christmas)  We wish you a happy Monday,  We wish you a happy Monday,  We wish you a happy Monday…all day long.

Song to Aid Transitions…
(London Bridge)  Time to put our work away, work away, work away,  Time to put our work away, so we can play outside.

Now it’s time to come inside, come inside, come inside,  Now it’s time to come inside, so we can have some snack.

Let’s all go wash our hands, wash our hands, wash our hands,  Let’s all go wash our hands, so we can have some lunch.

Now it’s time to say goodbye, say good-bye, say good-bye,  Now it’s time to say good-bye until another day.

You can make up other verses as needed. For example, I like to  Sing the following verse to help the child shake excess sand off  Before they come indoors.

Now it’s time to stomp our feet, stomp our feet, stomp our feet,  Now it’s time to stomp our feet, so we can go inside.

Story Time...
(Sing a Song of Sixpence) It’s time to watch and listen, We’re going to read a book. We’ll sit down on the rug And use our eyes to look. We’ll look at pictures, And hear the story, too. Oh, what fun it is to share This story time with you!

Circle Time…
(Row, Row, Row Your Boat) Hush, ssh, quiet please, Let’s all gather near. Find a friend and sit right down, Circle time is here.

Clean Up Freeze…
Play a song as children clean up from an activity of playtime. Throughout the song, stop the music and have everyone freeze. Restart the music to get the little ones moving again. Works really well.

Special Words…
Each day announce a special word of the day the relates to the theme. For example if the theme is transportation, the special Word might be truck. Each time you say the word, children must stop and listen for special instructions. It’s a great way to get attention quickly.

The Clean Up Train…
When the classroom needs extra cleaning up, announce that it is time for the clean up train. Ask each child to line up behind you, and hold on to the person’s waist in front of them. Begin chugging around the room, when you see an area that needs special attention; call out first stop block area. The person directly behind you is in charge of that area. Keep going until everything is in order. When it’s all finished lead the children around the room and let them make Toot! Toot! sounds.

The Clean Up Song…
